I'm surprised you didn't use Giovanni delle Bande Nere as a perfect example of wounds that turn bad a few days after being "healed". My understanding is that he died of gangrene. And I know he was hit in the thigh, had his leg amputated, yet the investigation of his skeleton remains showed no damage to the bones (aside from amputation). So could this be a case of death by sepsis (a result of malpractice in modern terms)? Basically, one needed to 1) survive the battle after the wound, 2) survive the healing depending on the doctor.
